4 Things you Should Know About Duvets

Cold and chilly nights make us cherish our duvets even more because the warmth they offer us is pleasant; duvets are materials laid of a bed for hygiene, warmth, protection of the mattress and decorative effect. They are used as a blanket keeping beds cosy at night and fashionable during the day.

Duvets can reduce the complexity of making a bed as they can be used without other bed covers, allowing individuals to quickly make their beds before leaving home. An added advantage is that they are usually soft and light; it is important to pick the right kind of duvet for your room because they can determine how well you sleep at night.

Here are 4 things you should know about duvets

Contents

1. The type of fill

fill

Duvets consist of a soft flat bag that can be filled with either natural material like down, feather, wool, cotton and bamboo or artificial materials like microfiber, holly fibre and polyester. Natural fillings usually achieve higher levels of warmth with less filling, and are more breathable but might require being professionally cleaned rather than machine washed. Synthetic fillings are less expensive, usually designed to accommodate people with allergies and easy to care for. The higher the duvet fill power, the better the duvet.

2. Covering and Thread Count

Cotton is a common material that is usually used to cover duvets; it is easy to maintain, provides impressive comfort and isn’t expensive. Silk, silk blends and cotton blends are other shell materials used for duvets; the shell material requires a high thread count to ensure the fill material stays inside the shell. Higher thread count fabric is typically finer and lighter in weight, giving more comfort and airiness to the sleeper.

3. Duvet size

duvet sizeThe size of your bed makes choosing a duvet size simple; duvets come in twin, double, king and queen sizes. It is advisable to get a duvet that is a size up from the size of your bed if you like extra covering, in order to make your bed more attractive or simply because, you like a lot of duvet to cuddle up to. If your partner tends to move around a lot while sleeping or tends to grab more than their fair share, it would be better to get a size up to avoid fighting over the duvet at night.

4. Tog rating

tog

A tog is a measurement of thermal insulation, a high tog rating will mean that your duvet will keep you warm even in very cold weathers but low rating means it has a lower insulation. The tog rating of a duvet, together with the filling determines its weight, softness and warmth. A high rating duvet might not necessarily be the best for you depending on the atmosphere and whether you enjoy sleeping in a cool or warm environment. You could get different duvets for cool and warm seasons or you could get a duvet with a suitable tog that would be okay for both cool and warm seasons.

Using duvets for children under 12 months is not advisable as there is a risk of overheating and suffocation; older children will be kept warm with a light duvet with low tog ratings.
