Smallest States in Nigeria and their Population

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa with a population estimate of about 170 million people. With 36 states and the FCT, the population of the country is spread throughout all those states, with some being more populated than others.  The land mass of the states in Nigeria is not shared equally as with the population, some states are small with a large population while you will also find large states with a small population.

Worthy of note is that most of the smallest states are in the southeastern part of Nigeria while the large states are in the northern part of the country.

Ebonyi State

Ebonyi state is in south-east Nigeria with a population of 2,173,501.  The capital Abakaliki is also the largest city in the state. Other major towns include Afikpo, Onueke, Edda, Onicha etc. Ebonyi state was one of the six states created in 1996 by the then federal military government, making it one of the youngest states in Nigeria.  The State of Ebonyi was created from parts of both Enugu State and Abia State; which were initially constituents of the old Anambra and Imo states respectively.

Ebonyi state is known as the “Salt of the Nation” because of its large salt deposits, It has 13 Local Government Areas and shares a border with Benue State to the North, Enugu State to the West, Imo and Abia States to the south and Cross River State to the east. For administrative purposes, Ebonyi State is divided into three Senatorial Zones, each represented by a Senator at the National Assembly, and six Federal Constituencies, each represented by a Member of the House of Representatives also at the National Assembly. The three Senatorial Zones are:

  • Ebonyi North – comprising Abakaliki, Ebonyi, Ishielu, Ohaukwu and lzzi LGAs
  • Ebonyi Central – comprising Ikwo, Ezza North, and Ezza South LGAs
  • Ebonyi South – comprising Afikpo North, Afikpo South, lvo, Ohaozara and Onicha LGAs

The people of Ebonyi State are predominantly farmers and traders. The main crops produced in the State are rice, yam, palm produce, cocoa, maize, groundnut, plantain, banana, cassava, melon, sugar cane, beans, fruits, and vegetables.

Abia State

Abia, one of the states in the southeastern part of Nigeria, occupying a space of 6,32033 square kilometers. Its capital is Umuahia and the major commercial city is Aba. Abia state has 17 Local Government Areas, after being carved out of the former Imo State in 1991. The state now has a population of 2,833,999. The name “Abia” is an abbreviation of four of the state’s densely populated regions Aba, Bende, Isuikwuato, and Afikpo.

The traditional language of Abia people is Igbo as 95% of its population is Igbo. English is widely spoken and serves as the official language in governance and business. Abia’s residents are mainly Christians.

Imo State

Imo state lies in the South East of Nigeria with a population of 3,934,899. Its size in square kilometers is 5,53035 and occupies the area between the lower River Niger and the upper and middle Imo River. Owerri is its capital and largest city. Its other major cities are Orlu and Okigwe.

The chief occupation of the local people of Imo state is farming but due to over-farming and high population density, the soil has greatly degraded. The cash crops include oil palm, raffia palm, rice, groundnut, melon, cotton, cocoa, rubber, maize, etc. Consumable crops such as yam, cassava, cocoyam, and maize are also produced in large quantities.

Anambra State

Anambra is another state in southeastern Nigeria with 4,182,032 and 4,84436 of population and size in square kilometers respectively. The capital and seat of government is Awka. Onitsha is by far the largest urban area. The state’s theme is “Light of the nation.” Old Anambra State was created in 1976 from part of East Central State, and its capital was Enugu. A re-organization in 1991 divided Anambra into two states, Anambra and Enugu.

Lagos State

Lagos is the smallest state in Nigeria with a size of only 3,345 square kilometers. However, it is one of the most populated with 9,013,534 residents.

Lagos state is located in the southwestern geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The smallest in the area of Nigeria’s 36 states. Lagos State is arguably the most economically important state of the country. It is a major financial center and would be the fifth largest economy in Africa if it were a country.
