Tips for Choosing a Kitchen Sink

The kitchen is the part of the house used for food preparation. There are several components that make up the kitchen, one of the most important is the kitchen sink. In a room where regular washing – be it of food, hands, items – is done, the sink serves a vital purpose.

In buying a sink for your kitchen, these are some of the factors to consider before making a choice:

Contents

Number of Bowls

A kitchen sink could have single or double bowls. They serve the same purpose of cleaning and washing materials used in the kitchen. Although with a double bowl sink, washing can be done in one and rinse in the other. There are also Low Divide sinks that has the look of a single bowl but can serve the purpose of a double bowl sink.

Bowl Depth

Bowl depth is another important factor to consider when choosing a sink. Deeper kitchen sinks provide more space in order to wash dishes or large items, such as pots, pans, and cookie sheets. Sinks with shallow depth, however, have the advantage of ease of reachability during use.

Sink Material

The kind of material a sink is made from is another important factor to be considered. These are the common materials used to make kitchen sinks.

  • Stainless Steel

Stainless steel sinks are very common in many homes Nigeria. According to a survey, 70% of all sinks are made from stainless steel. Stainless steel is highly resistant to heat and stain, and less costly, compared to other materials. However, it scratches easily and makes a loud sound when hit, although many sinks have a spray coating to help reduce the noise.

Stainless steel is classified in terms of gauge. Lower gauge steel is heavier, while higher gauge is lighter. Most people have the notion that heavier gauge steel makes for a better sink, but this is not true. However, a heavier gauge sink can be less noisy and more resistant to denting.

  • Cast IronImage of cast iron sink

Cast iron is another material used to make kitchen sinks. It is one of the oldest and is still very popular today. Compared to bare iron which rusts easily, cast iron sinks have an enamel coating. This makes it tough, stain-resistant and easy to clean. The downside of cast iron sink is its weight – heavy. This can make installation more difficult. Cast iron is also more expensive, compared to stainless steel.

  • Composite

Composite sinks are made by combining crushed granite or quartz with a resin filler. This combination produces a material that combines many of the same qualities of real granite or quartz, making it tough and highly resistant to stains and scratching.

Fireclay Sinks

Fireclay sinks are constructed by molding a ceramic clay into the shape of the sink and allowing it to dry at a high temperature for a period of up to 40 hours. Porcelain enamel is then applied and the sink is placed in a tunnel kiln at an extremely high temperature. This is why fireclay sinks are considered more durable than cast iron. The method of production makes fireclay sinks expensive. Also, the enamel can chip when a metal or glass drops heavily on it.

Top mount sink

Top mount sink is designed to have a rim that holds the sink in place when it’s dropped into a hole in the counter top. Because there is no need for internal support under the counter, top mount sinks are easy to install and inexpensive. However, the little opening at the rim can be a point of dirt accumulation. It also has a less sophisticated appearance compared to other sink types that are installed under the counter.
