University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) : courses, admission requirements, faculties

University of Maiduguri, also known as UNIMAID is in the capital city of Borno State, Maiduguri, Nigeria. It is run by the Federal Government and was created in the year 1975. With faculties like medicine, engineering, education, law, management science, social science, agriculture, arts, science and veterinary medicine, the University has earned for itself a reputation in its own right despite the occurrence of terrorist attacks on the state and on the University itself on some rare occasions.

University of Maiduguri is currently the leading tertiary institution in the North Eastern part of the country despite the territorial opposition. There are 27 Directorates and Institutes in the University of Maiduguri, namely:

UNIMAID Vision Statement

The University of Maiduguri, apart from achieving competence in the basic Arts and Sciences, aims at excellence in Agriculture, Pastoralism, Engineering, Human and Veterinary Medicine as well as Information Technology and in Arid Zone, Trans-Saharan and Inter-African Peace and Strategic Studies. The University also aims to provide private and public morality, discipline, accountability and probity as well as development of cooperation through participation, research and dissemination of information.

UNIMAID Mission Statement

The University of Maiduguri shall be an institution dedicated to scholarship and learning in the Arts, Sciences, Humanities and Technology, and the development of moral and civic character of all persons that pass through her portals. The University shall facilitate and advance scholarship and learning, especially in view of her location in the Sahelian environment of the North-Eastern Nigeria, and being at crossroads of African and Middle-Eastern cultures.

Objectives of the University of Maiduguri

  • a. encourage the advancement of learning and hold out to all persons without distinction of race, creed, sex or political conviction the opportunity of acquiring a higher and liberal education;
  • b. provide courses of instruction and other facilities for the pursuit of learning in all its branches, and to make those facilities available on proper terms to such persons as are equipped to benefit from them;
  • c. encourage and promote scholarship and conduct research in all fields of learning and human endeavor;
  • d. relate its activities to social, cultural and economic needs of the people of Nigeria; and undertake any other activities appropriate for a University of the highest standard.

University of Maiduguri Academic Session

The University of Maiduguri operates a two-semester sessions for its regular courses
and a long vacation period for vacant (or Extra mural) courses if any. A semester is
expected to last foro about 17 to 18 weeks (Including registration, teaching and
examination periods), provided that not less than 15 weeks each are actually devoted
to teaching.

Duration of Degree Programme

The minimum number of years to be spent to be awarded a first degree in a
programme of study in non professional areas shall be four years, and shall not exceed
an additional 50% of the duration of the programme if a student fails to graduate within
the minimum number of years. In some profressional areas, the requirement is longer.
Five years are the minimum in Agriculture, Engineering and Law, and six years in
Human and Veterinary Medicine.

General Admission Requirements into University of Maiduguri

i)   In order to be admitted to a Bachelor Degree in any of the Faculties, a prospective
student must satisfy the minimum University Entrance Requirement (and where
applicable, the additional faculty requirements as provided in the regulartions governing
admission) detailed by Joint Admission and Metriculation Board.

ii)   Follow an approved course of studey for a prescribed period; Pass the required
examinations set out in thee detailed degree regulations of the various Faculties; pay
all prescrived fees.

iii)   And comply with such other regulations and requirement as may be prescribed.
Minimum age of 16years on 1st October of the year of admission. General requirements
for entry course in the School Certificate or General Certificate of Education (SSCE) or
(GCE) of (NECO) with Credits in at least five (5) Ordinary Level subjects obtained at not
more than two sitting (subject to University requirements).

General requirements for entry to one-year remedial programme, minimum of ordinary
level credits in the relevant subjects including English and Mathematics. Remedial
courses are restricted to student from catchment areas. Direct Entry requirement
leading to honors degree is “A” Level passes with SSCE/GCE Ordinary Level Credit
passes in the required subjects at not more than two sittings. NCE Candidates are
required to posses two passes in two major subject and five “O” Level credit passes in
the relevant subjects.
